ALL IRELAND CLUB CAMOGIE FINALS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 29TH

All Ireland senior final, Athenry (Galway) v Cashel (Tipperary), St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge, 2pm

A repeat of the 2007 All Ireland final when Cashel claimed their only title. So, revenge is on the mind of Athenry who are attempting to win the Cup for the first time in 32 years.
Both captains will play a major role. Una O’Dwyer is skipper of Cashel, and the full back will pull the strings from the edge of the square where up front Claire Grogan is the big threat.
Athenry captain Therese Maher is a massive player and her influence will have a big say.
Verdict: Cashel

Athenry: S Gannon; K Glynn, A Poniard, D Coen; C Cunniffe, R Glynn, K Ruddy; S Donohue, L Linnane; N Jordan, T Maher (Capt), N Coen; B Kerins, K O’Dwyer, M Keogh.

Cashel: H Breen; C Ryan, U O’Dwyer (Capt), N Dwyer; P Bulfin, P Fogarty, J McGrath; J Horan, L Grogan, C Hennessy, M Morrissey, C Grogan; A Lonergan, E Hayden, C Dwyer.

All Ireland junior final, Lavey (Derry) v St Anne’s Dunhill, (Waterford), Donaghmore Ashbourne, 2.30pm

This is a new pairing, thus there will be a first title for whichever club comes out tops. St Anne’s dethroned The Harps in the semi-final and based on this will come in as favourites. Karen Kelly is top scorer at full forward and will need watching.
Likewise Mary O’Kane is a big name for Lavey and the Number 14 was instrumental in their comfortable victory over Four Roads at the penultimate stage. There will be very little between these two teams.
Verdict: St Anne’s

Lavey: C Boyle; A McVeigh, K Taggart, C Mullan; A McMullan, C Cushnahan, S Convery (Capt); A McPeake, E Henry; T McIlroy, C McCloy, D McShane; P McCloy, M O’Kane, H O’Neill.

St Anne’s: C Ahern; E Fitzgerald, L Mooney, L Behan; C Whyte, A Raher, S Kavanagh; C M Raher, A Dunphy; M Murphy (Capt), J Simpson, K Rockett; Z O’Donaghue, K Kelly, N Rockett.

Athenry, Cashel to Contest Camogie Club Final

ATHENRY set up an All Ireland senior club camogie final to savour with Cashel in two weeks time following their respective semi-final victories yesterday. It is over 30 years since the Galway club claimed the Bill Carroll trophy, and this is a decider the westerners will very much look forward to, when they meet a Tipperary outfit who picked up their only All Ireland in 2007.

The Galway girls had little difficulty overcoming Loughgiel in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe (1-15 to 0-3) as captain Therese Maher grabbed 1-3. There was never any question of victory going elsewhere with Brenda Kerins, Laura Linnane and Noreen Coen adding to the tally.

It was always going to be a tough ask for a young Loughgiel team, who made the Antrim championship their main aim. They failed to emulate their conquerors in that decider, O’Donovan Rossa, who are the reigning All Ireland club titleholders.

Meanwhile, following an incredible battle in Oulart-the-Ballagh, Cashel had to come from behind before pulling off a memorable 1-14 to 2-7 win over first time semi-finalists Oulart, The Slaneysiders got off to a great start with goals from Una Leacy and Diane Ryan to give them an interval lead of 2-5 to 0-9.

But, a Cashel goal inside 10 minutes of the restart from Mairead Morrissey let them back in. They hit a purple patch after that confining the Wexford side to just two second half points. The prolific Claire Grogan, Cora Hennessy and Morrissey fired some excellent points for the Munster girls to run out victors by four points.

Elsewhere, in another thrilling encounter St Anne’s Dunhill, Waterford caused the shock of the day when they qualified for their first All Ireland junior final after ousting The Harps 3-10 to 0-16 at O’Moore Park Portlaoise. The Laois girls were seeking their fourth title in succession. First half goals from Zoe O’Donoghue and Karen Kelly yielded a 2-5 to 0-9 advantage at the break, with a second major from O’Donoghue proving decisive.

Their opponents will be Lavey from Derry who firmly put the disappointment of last year’s defeat behind them when they outclassed Four Roads of Roscommon, 3-12 to 0-2. Green flags from the in-form Mary McKane (2-4) and Paula McCloy was the main difference in this tie.

Camogie All Stars Announced

All-Ireland Champions Cork dominate Camogie All-Stars with Gemma O’Connor getting honoured for an unprecedented sixth successive time. While five players receive All Star awards for the first time.

Six members of the 2009 All-Ireland winning Cork team have been named tonight in the Camogie All Star team which was announced at Citywest Hotel.

It was a special evening for Gemma O’Connor – currently on army duty in Chad – who was rewarded with an unprecedented sixth consecutive All Star. O’Connor’s versatility is highlighted by the fact she has won awards in three different areas of the pitch. The St Finbarr’s player was represented by her mother Geraldine.

Gemma is joined by goalkeeper Aoife Murray, full back Cathriona Foley, centre back Mary O’Connor, midfielder Briege Corkery as well as top scorer in the championship Rachel Moloney who are all taking home their third awards.

Championship runners-up, Kilkenny, received five awards with Jacqui Frisby, Elaine Aylward, Anne Dalton and Katie Power earning their first All-Star, in recognition of the Black and Amber reaching the All Ireland decider after a wait of eight years. Aoife Neary collected her second award in two years.

Beaten semi-finalists Galway received three awards. Therese Maher picks up her third while Regina Glynn and Anne Marie Hayes are winners for the second time.

Grainne McGoldrick is a first time winner for Derry.

The O’Neills Young Player of the Year award went to Kilkenny’s Denise Gaule. This has been an incredible year for the Kilkenny forward who featured prominently in the Cats fourth consecutive All Ireland minor win. The Windgap player amassed an amazing 5-11 between the All Ireland minor semi-final and final. She also had a prolific season in front of the posts with the senior team.

Denise Cronin was named the O’Neills Manager of the Year following back-to-back victories with Cork. The former Glen Rovers and County star led the Rebels to their eighth successive final appearance in 10 years, and to their 24th title overall – just two behind titleholders Dublin. After a very successful playing career, Denise took over the management of the Cork team in 2008.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Joan O’Flynn, President of the Camogie Association said, “The All Stars awards recognise the individual excellence and leadership of the leading camogie players this season. The Awards are a treasured keepsake as they signify the achievement of playing camogie to the highest standards.

“This recognition is now also extended to players from the Junior All Ireland series through the inaugural Soaring Star Awards. In a season when 13 different counties won National League and All Ireland Championship titles, the 2009 All Star and Soaring Star Award winners claim their rightful place as wonderful exponents of all that’s best in Camogie”.

Cashel Crush Killeedy

blog No Comments »

AS CASHEL cruised into the Munster senior camogie club championship final on Saturday defeating Limerick champions Killeedy by 0-26 to 0-2, Sinead Millea was forced to watch from the sideline. It was exactly five weeks since she broke her ankle while helping the Tipperary side to their first Kilmacud All Ireland 7’s title last month. The former Kilkenny inter-county star plays her club camogie in Tipperary, and is hopeful should Cashel get to the final at the end of November, she might be ready to play some role.

“If we progress I would love to be able to make an impact, maybe for 10 minutes,” she said. “I know the leg will need a lot of work, but I have been lucky that I broke the ankle as a result of a direct blow and not by going over on it. I was told that the rehab will be more straightforward as there is not as much ligament damage.

“Of course, I am not being too presumptuous either. Cashel are not looking too far ahead, they are taking one match at a time. The Munster final is in Mallow on Sunday week against the Cork/Clare champions. Even if we do move on to the All Ireland series, it is going to be difficult to win back my place. Looking at them today, there was no weak link, all 15 played so well.”

Cashel won their only All Ireland club title in 2007 but failed to emerge from the Tipperary championship last year. It was Drom & Inch who reached the All Ireland decider only to be denied by Belfast’s O’Donovan Rossa.

John Grogan is manager of Cashel and his daughters Claire and Linda are on the team. Claire who was nominated for an All Star last week notched seven points. Fellow county players Emily Hayden and Cora Hennessy rowed in with 11 points between them.

Millea, a teacher in Tipperary, says Cashel would love to regain the trophy they claimed two years ago. It will be a long road, as they found out in the Tipperary championship. They had to survive an epic battle with Burgess/Duharra in the county final, that wasn’t decided until extra time.

The nominations for the 2009 Camogie All Stars were announced today with All-Ireland champions Cork being rewarded with 12 nominations and defeated finalists Kilkenny receiving 11 nominations. The winners will be announced at a gala banquet in the Citywest Hotel on Saturday, 7th November.

Their team mates Aoife Murray, Cathriona Foley, Briege Corkery and leading championship scorer Rachel Moloney are amongst those seeking back-to-back awards.
Kilkenny, who contested their first final since 2001, have players nominated in all but four positions including Aoife Neary who was the Cats’ sole recipient in 2008. Other nominees include captain Ann Dalton, her midfield partner Collette Dormer, Elaine Aylward and Katie Power.

Galway Take All Ireland Intermediate Title

blog No Comments »

GALWAY captain Caroline Kelly got the ideal going away present as the Maroon overcame Cork in the Gala All Ireland intermediate camogie championship final replay at McDonagh Park, Nenagh on Saturday. The 22-year-old from the Davitt’s club is moving to London shortly for a year to continue her work as a nurse, and says winning the Jack McGrath trophy means a great deal to Galway.

“We won it in 2004, but it is different this time. We trained hard for this competition, whereas five years ago it was a case of getting together once the seniors were beaten and then concentrate on the intermediate championship. This year it was a big deal for us.”

Following a draw three weeks ago when they let a four point lead slip, the 3-10 to 1-5 scoreline was far more emphatic on this occasion. Kelly explains, “We tore into the game from the start, and for the past three weeks we trained really hard. Our manager Noel Finn is good friends with Bertie Sherlock (involved with Waterford hurlers and the Clare camogie team) and he came in to help out Basil Larkin with the training, and it was brilliant. We were hopping off the ground.”

U16 All Ireland medallist Laura Mitchell set the tone when the first half sub netted on 24 minutes. However, Eimear Watson answered immediately with one for Cork to leave the interval score, 1-6 to 1-2.
Galway were slowly beginning to take control, especially Sarah Dervan who was superb at centre back, as was midfielder Paula Kenny. When Aoife Lynskey found the net on 37 minutes and Caroline Murray followed six minutes later, it was all Galway, who maintained that momentum right to the finish line.
Kelly was particularly pleased with the nature of the victory, believing it will impact positively on their senior set up for 2010.

“Galway already have a very good senior panel, so it means there will be more competition. It was very disappointing to be beaten by Kilkenny. Many people believe there is a senior All Ireland in Galway. Up to Saturday we hadn’t won anything major at senior level since 2004, so it would be great if our win is motivation.”

Five-in-a-Row Cork Secure 12 All Star Nominations

blog No Comments »

The 2009 O’Neills/TG4 Ladies Gaelic Football All Star nominations have been announced with Senior All-Ireland Finalists Cork and Dublin dominating with 21 of the 45 nominations between them. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Citywest on Saturday, 14th November.

The Rebelettes, unsurprisingly, have secured the most nominations with 12 covering every area of the pitch. Amy O’Shea and Ciara O’Sullivan are in line for their first All Stars, while amongst the most decorated are Juliet Murphy and Angela Walsh, going for their fourth and fifth awards respectively.

Dublin, who put up a memorable display against Cork in this year’s senior final, have nine players nominated, including goalkeeper Cliodhna O’Connor and captain Denise Masterson at midfield. They are amongst those looking to secure a first All Star for Dublin since half back Gemma Fay collected in 2005.

In all, 12 counties are represented in the nominations. Mayo have four, with Golden Boot winner Cora Staunton going for number seven, while Kildare’s Noelle Earley has made it two football All Star nominations in one family, following her brother Dermot’s nomination last month.

Galway’s early season form has secured the team four nominations and semi finalists Monaghan have five. Intermediate champions Clare have three nominations, Tyrone and Armagh have two each and Longford, Fermanagh, and Tipperary are rewarded with one each.

Making the announcement, Ladies Gaelic Football Association President Pat Quill said, “2009 has been a truly memorable year for ladies football with three classic finals having been played out at Croke Park with over 20,000 in attendance.

“Year by year new teams are pushing to the forefront, which is encouraging and indicative of the growing strength of the game. It is heartening to see Dublin back in the spotlight and they deserve their nine nominations and Clare are rewarded with three which shows that there is real talent at intermediate level. Congratulations are due to all the nominees and we look forward to what is sure to be a great night for everyone involved.”
