Cork hurling legend Sean Og O hAilpin believes GAA players should be paid.??O hAilpin, whose brother Setanta turned his back on a hugely promising hurling career in 2003 to pursue a professional career with Aussie Rules club Carlton, said he would have loved a similar chance when he was younger.

“I would like to see the day when players are paid. There are huge demands on players now,” said the prominent GPA member.

“Ireland is a very small market – there’s only five or six games every year that are sold out. Maybe the best thing might be to set up a players’ fund using the gate receipts. I am in favour of seeing players paid. They should get something.”

He continued: “I would give my right hand for a chance like Setanta got. Setanta is a professional sportsman. I would have dreamed of being a professional athlete when I was a boy, but that’s life.
