This week the GAA launched a new limited edition €15 coin to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the GAA. The coin features the GAA branding and a representation of a hurler.

Only 10,000 of the coins were struck and they went on sale earlier in the week from the Central Bank and the GAA Museum for the princely sum of €36. It sounds like an exam question doesn’t it? If one euro costs one euro, how much does €15 cost? The Answer? Simple dumbo, it’s €36.

The Talking Balls team carried out some market research on this among people we know and came up with the following results:

Q: If we gave you €36, would you spend it on a coin to commemorate the 125th of the GAA or some Squareball gear?

Squareball 73%
The Coin 10%
Drink 8%
Didn’t understand the question 9%

Q:If you had already bought the coin, would you keep it or use it to buy some Squareball gear?

Keep it 2%
Buy Squareball gear 91%
I’m a referee and I can claim it on expenses 6%
Didn’t understand the question 2%

Q: Are you male or female?

Yes 52%
No 43%
Didn’t understand the question 5%

Q: Given the economic situation is it the right thing to be doing to introduce currency into the marketplace that people aren’t going to use?

In a free market economy, Milton Friedman said these are the sorts of initiatives that demonstrate confidence and recovery. 27%

I tried to buy a carryout with the coin in the local Topaz convenience store but the chap working there thought I was a f***in chancer (at least I think that’s what he said) 19%

I lost me coin when I tried to buy condoms on the toilet of a pub in Baggot Street on Tuesday night 7%

Do they still take punts in Leitrim? 15%

Of course people will use it, with €15 euro you can buy a pint in any pub in Dublin and still have just enough change to get yourself a packet of peanuts 22%

I understand the question but you’re an annoying hoor standin’ there with that f***in clipboard and them stupid questions. So please, go away. 10%

So there you have it. Some people do know what they’re talking about, others dunno what they’re talking about. But of those that do, statistics show that most prefer Squareball over all other brands.
